HARRY « BIG DADDY » HYPOLITE - Louisiana country boy
APO Rec. – USA 2001

Big Daddy is a sixty-five year old gentleman from Louisiana who had, like many other of his peers, tough childhood picking cotton in the fields. The opening of a juke joint in his village resulted in an unexpected twist of fate for Harry Hypolite, a teenager then. Many great Blues musicians came to play in that spot and, under their influence, Harry became himself a singer and a guitar player. Big Daddy has an amazing growling voice, his guitar licks are simple yet effective and the band wisely led by Jimmy D. Lane dishes out twelve tracks, partly Hypolite’s originals, partly classics including some Clifton Chenier’s songs. Yet, this is not a zydeco album for real; listen to the haunting « Someday », to the title track, or « Big Bad Girl » to get a taste of that unique fusion of Chicago-Mississippi sound nowadays almost forgotten. Through his clean playing, Lane is giving a great contribution, together with Big John Amaro’s Hammond, to a timeless album. What « Louisiana Country Boy » lacks in originality, it makes up for in authenticity.
