Bill Fay’s two only album on Decca from 1969 and 1971 are easier to appreciate now than them. At the time of the first release too many great music was going on, discovering a level of creativity hard to repeat. After 35 years a very well suited reissues of both album by Eclectic records is the occasion the set the record straight for Bill Fay.
A stiker on the cover of Ecletic’s releases speaks of Bill Fay as “the missing link between Nick Drake, Ray Davies and Bob Dylan “ but the similarities are diminuitive to Billy’s talent. As a composer Fay is skillful and very open minded for the time while lirically is deep, dark and meaningfull.
In the first of the two reissues, “Bill Fay “from 1969 much is due to the gat and pastorla music chart courtesy by a young and gifted Michael Gibbs, at his first expreience as a conductor as well, while in the following album “ Time of the last prosecution” a small combo gives back to the songs a natural freshness and spontaneity. Difference from one album to another are simple : full orchestrated and more focused as effort ( even if both album were recorded in a sigle day each!) the first of the two reissue, much more contrived and dedicated to inner spirituality the second one.
Intense is the right word to describe Billy Fay’s musical world : even today, after so many years, the weight of the original emotions is evident.
“Bill Fay “ and “ Time of the last prosecutor” are records which would impossible to be conceived, nor recorded today, no way, whatever you might say. They are the perfect photo of a time which will not come back. A time which will still be moving a bittersweet feeling even to those who weren’t living it at the time. And just for this reason alone, “Bil Fay “ and “ Time of the last prosecutors” are still two great albums not to be missed whose reissues are most welcomed.
