Eric Lindell - Gulf Coast Highway
(Alligator Records)

Gulf Coast Highway is Eric Lindell’s third CD. As PDB had the opportunity of reviewing his first opus- Change in the weather – we can only confirm our expectations have been made real by the fabulous musician who catches up the very spirit of New Orleans. Of course, if you can afford Robert Mercurio and Stanton Moore – Galactic’s famed rhythm section - in your recording band, the result can easily close to excellence, especially if you like the crawfish as the Galactic also comes from NO. Gulf Coast Highway smells of Professor Longhair’s sound – injected by Marc Adams’ awesome work on keyboards – with a spice of Meters and some Dr. John here and there, though with a less sophisticated approach. We should not forget another amazing musician: Jimmy Carpenter on tenor sax. The whole thing is under the control of Lindell’s guitar playing and inspired singing, who does possess original song-writing skills as shown in “If love can’t find a way”. Finally, Lindell finds himself also comfortable with country-oriented songs like “Love and Compassion” and “Turnin’ it out”, probably remainders of his younger days in New York. Blues and bare rock’n’roll are present as well, but everything rests under the NO label. Great photos on the booklet, what else do you want?
