Elliott shows for each character in each song a different and singular aspect bringing out the best of each. This is an approach not usual in blue singers who are mostly interested in sounding as much as blues as possible.
In “Elliott gets Muddy“ Murphy retains his own originality in this blues oriented album. His original compositions are the best part of the job (“open city”, the bittersweet approach in “who am i blues”), up to the same level of certain McKinley Morganfield classics chosen for this collection. ”Mannish boy“ or the beautiful, soulful rendition of “baby, what you want me to do“ are perfect example of a great album.
