Canadian JW Jones is one of best young guitar-players appearing at the beginning of this century: well respected by core top Blues musicians, he got everything a guitar axe needs: tone, attitude and excellent phrasing, and he happily merges tradition and modern sounds.
Should you have seen JW Jones live, it might have been difficult to grab that that shy, skinny yet smart looking boy walking by, was JW Jones in person, Canada’s top touring Blues Act, the “nervous fellow”, from one of his most-known songs. Canadians (Kanaks) are like that: low-profile, silent and hardworking. In spite of his young age, JW is at 6th release, all for the German label Crosscut Records who seems to trust a lot on this musician. His previous CD “Bluelisted” with Little Charlie Baty and Junior Watson should be made mandatory for any chap wishing to play some Blues guitar. This time Jones called in another guitar hero, Hubert Sumlin one the last Mohicans of a generation of Bluesmen who is fading away and Charlie Musselwhite, who should need no introduction to any average blues fan. Bearing in mind that he also buddy to Kim Wilson, one can safely say that Jones likes to play with the greatest! While he may have some room for improvement on vocals, song-writing and guitar playing are just among the finest around. Jones alternates Magic Sam inspired “Born Operator”, Freddie King-oriented “Howlin’ with Hubert” Chicago-Blues, a shuffle “I don’t go for that”, downhome numbers “Mean Streak” to rock-blues songs with a great easiness and a personal touch. Midnight Memphis Sun is probably his most mature and accomplished workout and Jones will have the burdensome obligation of living up the expectations he set in these years. And he’s barely 30 years old!
