Willie Buck - The Life I love
(Delmark Records)

A Chicago Blues pearl resurfaces from the Delmark vaults. Published in 1982 in a few copies, this album features a bunch of legendary Blues players, from the Myers brothers to Little Mac Simmonds through Johnny “Big Moose” Walker and a man with a great future, John Primer in one of his first appearance.

Almost totally unknown, singer Willie Buck would have vanished as a long gone memory of the Chicago Blues golden era should Delmark have not resurrected this 1982 “The life I love”. Yet these recordings seem to be dated much earlier as this is vintage Chicago Blues, and if you like this kind of Blues, you may have found a source of joy. It doesn’t swing and doesn’t groove, the rhythm section provides nothing more than raw, basic background for the dialogue among guitarists Louis Myers and John Primer, with the latter showing a good disposition on slide, an exercise that will become his trademark. Harp player Little Mac Simmonds is clearly in top form overshadowing the other harp players, the less famous Dimestore Fred, while Big Moose hones the ivories with great passion. Buck’s “How can I be nice to You” and “There is time” and Muddy Waters’ “I want you to love me” emerges from the other titles that seem to suffer of some fatigue. The bonus are five more songs from a live concert in Chicago two years later, the sounds is more primitive but the band is quite aggressive, with an excellent harp (there are reasonable doubts that the line-up was not exactly the same of the studio recordings. For sure, the drummer is different). Anyhow, the overall result is quite good and this album, without being a masterpiece, will not disappoint Chicago Blues fans.
