The Insomniacs are a terrific quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, a city in which many regional groups turned into internationally acclaimed blues bands. Despite their young age, this group sounds mature and self-confident: the starter track “Lonesome” a classic in West Coast Blues sets the tone of a great CD. Someone can object that when it comes to West Coast Blues, everything has already been said. In a sense, this is an additional compliment for the Insomniacs, a young band trying hard to play in a very challenging style. Many would appear ridiculous and pretentious, while The Insomniacs are doing it in a wonderful manner. Listen to the guitar solo in “Maybe sometime later”, the organ backing in “Lonesome”, the endless swinging mode of the rhythm section. It is crystal clear that these are musicians are here to stay: Vyasa Dodson on guitar and vocals; Alex Shakeri on keyboards, Dean Mueller an bass and Dave Melyan on drums. Mitch Kashmar made a remarkable appearance in “Hoodoo Man Blues”, another difficult song. After their debut release “Left Coast Blues”, the Insomniacs will have through this CD a great opportunity of getting popularity abroad. Call them in at your festival, now!
